The Dale Family
I started researching my family history in the late 1990's, and the Dale family was the first line that I researched. The first known facts I had for the Dale family was supplied, by my father Claude "Johnny" Dale 1926-2005: He had told me that his father Thomas Alfred Dale 1896-1943, served in the Duke of Cornwall Light Infantry and the Machine Gun Crops, during the first world war. He was a carpenter and postman, he died in 1943, and that his grandfather had lived at First Street, in Chelsea, London.
With the little information that I had, I started my research using the free website, www.familysearch.org and found the Dale family in the 1881 census:
30 First Street, Chelsea, Middlesex.
Thomas Dale Head 38 Tailor, Cheshire.
Sarah Dale Wife 42 Devon.
Ernest Y Dale Son 5 Middlesex.
Edgar S Dale Son 4 Middlesex.
Cecil R Dale Son 1 Middlesex.
Percy F Dale Son 4 months, Middlesex.
I was hooked, within no time at all, I had found my 2x great grandparents, Thomas born in Cheshire about 1843, and his wife Sarah born in Devon in about 1839.
I had now started my long journey into the unknown. At about the same time my mum had dig out a family tree of the Dale family, giving to her by a 2nd cousin.
Thought the family tree given to my mum, by 5 x great grandparents were George Dale and Sarah Ackerley, and my 4x great grandfather Thomas Dale 1779-1825. But since I could not find a Baptist/christening record for a Thomas Dale son of George and Sarah, I had my doubts.
In 2021, via a dna match, I now believe without a doubt, that my 4x great grandfather Thomas was born at Goostrey-cum-Barnshaw in the County of Cheshire, and baptised the 13 June 1779, the son of John Dale a sawyer from Manchester in the County of Lancashire, and his wife Elizabeth Betty Holt, who were married on the 3 September 1777 at Cheadle in Cheshire.
The 1881 Census for the Dale family, which had me hooked on genealogy. I found out at a later date that the people at 28 were relatives of Sarah, wife of Thomas. James and Frances Harris were her siblings and Ellen Hodge was also a related to her.
